MTN Smart Data: The Hidden Plans That Can Save You Money Every Month
You know that feeling when your data finishes and you check your balance, only to realise you spent ₦3,000 for something that barely lasted three days? No Wi-Fi backup, NEPA has carried light, and your hotspot is the only thing keeping your laptop alive. That pain is very real.
MTN has a set of plans sitting quietly under something called Smart Data. Many people do not know it exists. Some have seen it and scrolled past. But if you dial *121# and tap into that menu, you might find offers that are much cheaper per GB than the regular plans most of us just default to.
It is a personalised data offer system. MTN looks at your sim, your usage history, and whatever magic formula they use, then decides what to offer you. That means not every Nigerian sees the same plans. Your friend on the same network might get different options. Do not be surprised.
That said, here are the plans that have been spotted across different sims. Use them as a guide when you check your own line.
Breaking Down Each Plan
The 1-day plan: ₦1,000 for 4.5GB.
If you just need to get something done fast and you know your activity will be heavy for one day, this works. Downloading files, joining a video call from your laptop hotspot, watching something online.
Get in, get out. At roughly ₦222 per GB, it is not bad for a single-day buffer.

The 7-day options
This is where it gets interesting. Some sims see ₦2,500 for 12GB, ₦3,000 for 13GB, or ₦4,000 for 20GB. The 20GB option at ₦4,000 works out to ₦200 per GB.
That is genuinely competitive for a weekly plan, and most people who are not streaming 4K video all day will find 20GB comfortable for a week.
14 days at ₦7,000 for 35GB. This one is solid. You get about ₦200 per GB, enough data to last a moderate user two full weeks without rationing every WhatsApp video or Instagram scroll. I tried this on a line for about two weeks and barely touched the ceiling.
The monthly plans give you 56GB at ₦12,000 or 70GB at ₦14,000. The 70GB option comes to exactly ₦200 per GB. If you are working from home, running a small business on Instagram, managing a team’s communication tools, or using your phone as the main internet source in the house, that 70GB is a different conversation entirely.
The “Data for Me” offers. These are smaller, quicker options. ₦300 for 1GB valid for one day. ₦500 for 2GB valid for two days. They are not for anyone with heavy data needs.
But for someone who only uses their phone for WhatsApp, a quick Google search, or sending documents, these work without hurting the pocket too badly.
How to Check Your Own Offers

Select “Smart Data” from the menu. What appears on your screen is your personal offer. Only buy what you see there. Do not compare with a friend’s phone.
MTN builds these offers per sim, based on your history with the network. That means what appears on your line is specific to you. Your neighbour might get the 70GB monthly plan while your sim only shows 56GB. Or you might see a ₦300 Data for Me offer that theirs does not have. Check yours directly.
If you typically buy small bundles every two or three days, run the numbers honestly. Buying ₦300 six times in two weeks is ₦1,800 for maybe 6GB. The 7-day 12GB plan at ₦2,500 gives you twice as much for a little more money. Consistency beats impulse buying, and your data budget will thank you by the end of the month.
Also, if your sim does not show Smart Data options at all, dial *131*4# or check the MyMTN app under “Buy Data.” Some lines get the offers there instead. MTN rolls out availability gradually, so keep checking. It is worth it when it shows up.
